What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a disorder that is marked by pauses or decreased breathing when sleeping. These brief changes in breathing affect the quality of sleep and supply of oxygen to the body.
This condition is diagnosed by a physician which could include a sleep study.
The Types of Sleep Apnea include:
- Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) – occurs when the brain fails to control muscles involved in respiration.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – occurs when the airway at the back of the throat becomes physically blocked. Your bed partner can notice gasping during sleep or snoring. Snoring itself is not indicative of sleep apnea as it can be present or not.

CSA is less common than OSA and it is estimated that as high as 20% of US adults have OSA and a large majority of them are undiagnosed and untreated.
