Patient with Severe Wear - case Full Mouth Reconstruction

Patient with Severe Wear

CASE SUMMARY: Full Mouth Reconstruction

by Carlos Castro, DDS, FACP, Board Certified Prosthodontist

Here’s the story of a patient who was referred by another dental professional…
If you have a patient with several missing, broken, or severely worn teeth, they may be a candidate for a full mouth reconstruction with the assistance of a Prosthodontist.

Patient “Ben” was referred to me due to his complex dental needs. He was only 35 years old but was already very concerned about his severely worn dentition and multiple failing restorations. He suffered from amelogenesis imperfecta, which was made worse by bruxism and clenching.

As a Prosthodontist, I have experience planning multi-stage treatment and can coordinate with a patient’s general dentist and other dental specialists. Ben’s treatment sequence included:
1. Placement of dental implants and Layered Lithium Disilicate full-coverage crowns.
2. Restoration of Vertical Dimension.
3. Anterior guidance.
What made this case challenging was restoring proper Vertical Dimensions and providing restorations that would withstand severe forces in a proper occlusal scheme. I usually refer patients back to their general dentist for routine care, unless advised otherwise by the referring office, depending on the patient and treatment.
If you have comments or questions about how I treated Ben from this example, please email me at:
