Dental Treatment of Ectodermal Dysplasia | The opportunity of dentists to change someone's life forever
Dental Management of Ectodermal Dysplasia
Prosthodontists are specialized dentists who get involved in the care of patients with Ectodermal Dysplasia very early in their lives. Patients usually get referred to us by a pediatric dentist or a general dentist who has noticed abnormal number of teeth or baby teeth with different shapes, missing baby teeth or simply there is a delayed pattern of eruption.
Either way, intervention with a prosthodontist is recommended to provide cosmesis according to their age, restore masticatory function and help preserve structures until a more definitive therapy can be completed. Usually, once the patient has reached the threshold of growth and development around 18 – 19 years old, the size of the skull is not expected to change significantly therefore surgical procedures can be performed with a predictable outcome.
Ectodermal Dysplasia Dentition can be treated at any stage in life.
We welcome patients of all ages to be treated at our center and depending on the age, different diagnostic examinations are in order. The ultimate goal is to gather enough information to draw an individualized strategy for therapy. Every patient is unique no two therapies are the same.
In general, treatment objectives are the same: To maintain as much of what was given by nature, to restore function and esthetics, and to improve quality of life.
The dental expression of Ectodermal Dysplasia is different in every patient, so needs are also very different.
A comprehensive diagnosis and a careful strategic plan is required and elaborated during the first visits. The plan could include a combination of orthodontic therapy, provisional restorations, site development for future dental implants and concluding with definitive restorations. The final restoration can be fixed or removable depending on expectations, foundation tissues, volume of tissues to restore and affordability.

Developing innovative dental solutions for patients with Ectodermal Dysplasia
The Joanee's Case

As soon as we heard about Joanee’s case, we knew we had to do whatever it took to help find a solution for her and her family. So, we did a digital scan of her mouth, and, realizing it was very similar in size and shape to Dr. Carlos Castro’s daughter’s mouth. Dr. Castro decided to scan her own daughter’s teeth and use them as a model to create a custom set of dentures for Joanee.
“This had never been done before, but I knew I had the technology, the skills, and the team to make it happen.” Dr. Castro said.
We were able to fabricate these tiny Dentures that were replicas of Dr. Castro’s daughter’s teeth and use them to change Joanee’s life for the better. When we got Joanne into the office, she accepted the teeth immediately.
Dr. Castro said, “Fitting the dentures into Joanee’s mouth was probably the most emotional moment of my career.” She looked so happy. Her parents and our team were all in tears, and we knew that all our efforts had been worthwhile.
As Joanee grows, we will work with her and her family to create new dentures that fit her mouth and face as they develop. We will closely monitor Joanee until she is 17 or 18 years old and she stops growing, at which point she will be eligible for permanent Dental Implants.
